Delicious Curry House Celebration Dinner - 17 August 2019

ST MARY'S OLD BOYS CELEBRATION DINNER
DELICIOUS CURRY HOUSE - 17 AUGUST 2019

On this Saturday Nite, we had a Celebration Dinner at Delicious Curry House  attended by :-
- Chung Hee Menn, Robert Foo, Tommy Siew, Kwan Kar Choi, Wong Wan Kong, Robert Chong Tzu Fah, Alfred Pang, Leong Min Yee and Chang Kon Sang. The only invited Old Boy who could not attend was Sim Kang Loong.

To cheer up the dining spirit, we chose to eat outside and Tommy & Kon Sang walked to another nearby restuarant to buy 12 cans of Tiger Beer and one bottle of Guinness Stout for our table as our restaurant serves no beer. After the initial order which included 2 bowls of Assam Curry Fish, we placed a top up second order to give a good spread of dishes. In particular, their signature dish of Assam Curry Fish was so delicious that Tommy went to order a 3rd bowl !

Over beer and food, we talked about our old times in school and it was indeed a memorable night ..... every one was glad to have met up to cherish our old time.

St Mary's Old Boys 2019 Rainbow Tour of China

St Mary's Old Boys Ranbow Tour of China ( 19-26 February 2019)

On 19 February, a day after Chap Goh Mei, a group of 6 Old Boys from St Mary's Secondary School, Sandakan Class of 70 flew into HK from K Kinabalu on Air Asia and were welcome by Robert Foo and Hubert Hiew at Hong Kong Airport.
We took a coach from HK into Zhuhai crossing the spectacular HK - Zhuhai Bridge - reputed as the longest bridge in the world.
Our Tour included ancestral visits to town (Huizhou) and village (Zhongshan), open air hot spring bath, walking on Qingyuan glass tower and bridge, fine dining in Guangzhou restaurants and also in a private club, body massage in Changping where we stayed the longest. Three left the tour on 26 February and the rest stayed on for two more days until 28 February. We flew back to KK from the spectacular Shenzhen Airport.
Every tour member gave their full praise to Khen Foh for his un-tiring efforts in making this tour a pleasant and unforgetable one and he looked after every tour member so so well .....we all look forward to our next Old Boys Tour to Nanning China.

Before Kar Choi, Hubert and Kon Sang departed Changping on 26 February 2019, we took a group photo at the lobby and all wanted Khen Foh to take centre seat in full recognition of his excellent tour arrangement and leadership.

Hubert idea to dip ourselves in an outdoor hot spring pool and it was one of our tour highlights.

ST MARY OLD BOYS REUNION - SANDAKAN- 2017

On 29 April, 21 Old Boys from St Mary Class of 70 flew into Sandakan from San Francisco, Vancouver, Brisbane and Kota Kinabalu to celebrate our 2017 Reunion.

The April 2017 Reunion idea was first broached by Chong Khen Foh, who as Organizing Chairman, was tireless in making it happen.

This was a smaller gathering to our grand 11 November 2011 Reunion at Mark Lodge but much larger than our 2016 Mini Reunion in Francis Fong residence, both staged in Sandakan.

We all felt the bonding from our secondary years and much relished tales of childhood romance and old flames over our Reunion Dinner in Sandakan Golf Club on 29 April evening. Some Old Boys were gracious, when invited by the Organizing Chairman, to come to the rostrum to share their memories from our schooling years.

A surprise highlight was celebrating young Edward Chik birthday with 2 cakes specially arranged by Francis Fong who was ably assisting the Organizing Chairman but always shying from the spotlight.

On 30 April night, a seafood dinner was hosted by Francis Fong for our Old Boys in Ocean King and it was indeed a very sumptuous dinner.

We also had delicious pork innards porridge in Good Taste Restaurant on 30 April morning and Fish Head and  "Lai Man" Fish with fried meehoon/ mee on 1 May morning. The pork innards and fish head and fish were all freshly bought by Khen Foh in the early morning and prepared at home before bringing them to the restaurant to be immediately cooked for our Old Boys who had earlier registered for the 2 breakfasts.

Edward Chik and Tommy Siew flew off on 30 April afternoon but most KK Old Boys stayed on and left on 1 May.

It was  indeed a good good Reunion and all were full of praise and immensely grateful to Khen Foh and Francis Fong for organising it so very well for all of us.

Before we depart, all expressed keen interest to meet again in 2019 - this time in Kota Kinabalu and Hee Menn was our unanimous choice as Organizing Chairman for our 2019 Reunion.

WELCOME  TO HIEW HON HIUNG TO KOTA KINABALU

Hubert and son ( Morgan) arrived in Kota Kinabalu on Dragon Air on Wednesday night ( 4 January 2017) and were welcome by Tommy Siew and Kon Sang at Kota Kinabalu International Airport upon their arrival at 7,10 pm.

Immediately, they headed to Foh Sang for Prawn Mee dinner. Offered either seafood (as having safood reunion dinner on Friday) or bak kuh teh (regarded by Hubert as too West Malaysian), Morgan indicated preference for Prawn Mee instead.

On Friday, 6 January, K Kinabalu Old Boys hosted a dinner in Welcome Restaurant at Bundusun Penampang for Hubert and Morgan. Hubert was indded glad to meet up with his Old Boys - Hee Menn, Sim Kang Loon, Wong Wan Kong, Tommy Siew, Kar Choi and Leong Ming Yee - some like Hee Meng and Sim Kang Loong whom Hubert had not met since 1974 after he went to UK for his studies. ( Both Hee Menn and Sim KL did not attend our 2011 Reunion in Sandakan which was Hubert last trip to Sabah.

Hubert thanked all who came to his Welcome Dinner and we had a very warm and chatty dinner from 7.30 - 9.30 pm.

Before we dispersed, the four core members of Sapi Dog Gang group photo took a group photo before Kon Sang and Tommy sent Hubert and Morgan back to Putatan Soluxe Hotel.

This is a memorable group photo of Sapi Dog Gang - first group meeting of all the 4 core members since 1974. The 4 never were together in a group after Hubert left for UK studies in 1974. After Hubert had graduated and qualified in UK, he went straight from UK to work and live in HK ever since. This was his 3rd trip back to Sabah since 1974.

After receiving the above group photo from Kon Sang, Hubert remarked in his 23.59 hour message on the same night which read " A very memorable evening out with the Gang of Four also affectionately called Sapi Dog Dong. My son remarked this name indeed just fits us! Touched by the welcome and hospiyabilty shown. Sang pls feel free to post this to the chatroom."

KS 11.40 am Saturday 7 January 2017

Hubert left Kota Kinabalu on 7 January for Sandakan, his home town, wher we met up and had a reunion dinner with our Sandakan Old Boys on Sunday 8 January. He was back in Kota Kinabalu on 9 January for overnight stay before flying back to Hong Kong on 10th January Tuesday morning. Again, the idea of having a drink together was mooted and organised - the 4 core members of the Sapi Dog Gang met at Bukit Padang Foodcourt for a drink from 9.00 -10.45 pm and Hubert and Morgan were dropped off at Soluxe Hotel about 11 pm.

It was a Good Good Nite and when we look forward to meet again .....

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES WITH BROTHER AIDAN AT LA VINTAGE

One of the delights during the Welcome Dinner was to take a memorable snapshot with Brother Aidan and that was what most Old Boys did ...........

Starting with .....

Kon Sang

Francis Fong

Hee Menn

Kar Choi

Vui Poh

John Liau

Chong Tze Fah

Two Old Boys who did not provide a snapshot with Brother Aidan were Leong Ming Yee and Sim Kang Loong. But they were in the 3 Group Photos.

These are memorable snapshots with Brother Aidan who taught us in Form 4 and 5 in St Mary's Secondary School, Sandakan.

After dinner, a few bid farewell to Brother Aidan but some stayed back to enjoy a TGIF drink with Brother Aidan ... and a live band to add to the glamour of the nite until 11 pm.

WELCOME DINNER FOR BROTHER AIDAN
LA VINTAGE GRILL BAR - K KINABALU

On 2 September 2016, our St Mary Class of 70 gave a Welcome Dinner to Brother Aidan who flew in from Dublin the night before.

Sometime in May, Kon Sang received a surprise call from our St Mary school mate, Philip Ng, that Brother Aidan would be visiting Kota Kinabalu, arriving on 1 September and departing for Manila on 5 September. Our Class of 70 was given the honour to host a dinner for Brother Aidan on 2 September.

Accepting that honour, we circulated the good news amongst Old Boys in Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu. We immediately had Chung Hee Menn, Francis Fong, Leong Ming Yee, Pang Vui Po, Sim Kang Loong, Kwan Kar Choi and Chang Kon Sang confirming their attendance. Later, Chong Tze Fah was invited and John Liau also confirmed to make a total of 9 Old Boys +1 Brother Aidan = 10.

Hee Menn was the one to choose the Dinner venue and book a private room for 10 - a good choice befitting the occasion.

On 2 September eveining, Kon Sanag left his office together with Francis Fong at 6 pm, driving to Tanjong Aru to fetch Brother Aidan at 6,30 pm and arriving at 7 pm in La Vintage Grill Bar near Penampang for dinner. All in good time as scheduled.

Dinner was a 3 course Western dinner of roast lamb or chicken. Francis Fong brought along two bottles of wines to grace the occasion. He also took the initiative of printing of our Old Boys Reunion Souvenir Magaznes commenorating our November 2011 and March 2016 reunion in new covers for Brother Aidan. During this TGIF nite, our old boys all queued up to be photographed with Brother Aidan. Group phots was of course - obligatory! We also thought it would be a good idea to give cash (instead of gifts in kind) as pocket money to Brother Aidan to cover his sundry expenses during his Sabah stay and many did give him "ang pows."

Hubert Hiew (from Hong Kong) and Khen Foh (who could not join us as he was a key presenter in Tokio Marine Convention in K Lumpur on the same day) asked Kon Sang to say "Hi" and show their recent snapshots to Brother Aidan to trigger his memory of his star pupils. Francis Fong also showed photos of Old Boys featured in the souvenir magazine to him at the dinner table.

After dinner some left but Hee Menn proposed that we should proceed to the bar for Tiger Beer with Brother Aidan. Against the background live music from the resident band, Hee Menn,  Kon Sang, Kang Loong and Tze Fah stayed back to talk about old time with Brother Aidan late into the night.

After a good good nite, Kon Sang sent Brother Aidan back to his La Salle residence in
Tanjong Aru at 11 pm.

ROTI TISSUE WITH KHEN FOH

Khen Foh has been a regular traveller to Kota Kinabalu but always managed to squeeze time off his busy schedule to meet up with KK Old Boys.

Hee Menn, Kon Sang & Kar Choi always remembered with fondness their happy time in Sandakan during our Double Happiness Reunion when Khen Foh played the perfect host .

In KK on Merdeka Day, Khen Foh expressed his wish to check out on the Roti Tissue which he heard so much about and seeing is believing - he was indeed marvelled at its towering height when it was served and it went so well with curry beef and curry mutton.

Kar Choi could not join us for Roti Tissue as he was overseas but would be back in KK just in time for the next big event - St Mary Old Boys Class of 70 Welcome Dinner in La Vintage Restaurant for Brother Aidan who taught us in Form 4 & 5.

We were the last table left drinking and chatting away as Francis saw off most of his dinner guests. Only then a much relieved Francis was able to join us for chit chat, yam sing and a group photograph whilst kept reminding Khen Foh to take care of the three KK Old Boys on the following day.
