CAMPING TRIP - TELUPID
Hi,
The camping trip was organised by Thomas Siew in Form 4 to Telupid.
As much as I would like to join, my father would not allow me to go so I gave it a miss. Then, how did I laid my hand on the photo? No idea!
I remembered the gang (without me) were supposed to camp in the open but somehow, they sweet talked the local school Principal to allow them to camp overnight inside a class room.... in the photo, are Sim Kang Loon, Hubert Hiew and Ho Chi Ming.
Were the two lying down ,,, Thomas Siew and Chung Tze Ting?
Thomas Siew kept telling me that he would get me his old photos for posting on the blog but .......

Yes I can still remember vividly that trip. Half way to Telupid, I developed some urinary problem but was OK after drinking some water from washing of rice. Next morning or so, we saw some native women walking about in the town topless!
Regards,
Hubert
Hi Clement, ain't you grateful ur old man didn't allow you to join a bunch of misfits and perverts peeking at the topless old ladies bathing on the muddy river bank. We all could've been killed or disabled if I remembered right, we almost ran over a bridge that was discontinued on the way to Telupid. Then again, when u travelled with our lucky star-Tommy, u seem to always come out ahead somehow.
That was Tommy & me all right on the picture. We appeared to be 'getting it on' on the bed. It didn't take the much for us to get going then since we were all hormone raging teenagers & as Hubert mentioned there were topless ladies around. Back then, I wouldn't be surprised if we drove 35 mls just to check out the topless ladies. Nowadays, just a few miles from my hse, I don't even bother checking out all those jaw-dropping beauties with almost nothing on parading on the boardwalk in Redondo beach. I used to but no more, it shows time has changed.
What happen to my Wong Fei Fung buddy Tommy, is he back from China yet along with his concubine. Ask him to drop a few lines on the blog & don't worry about murdering the English language. I have been doing that for the past 30 yrs, so what and who cares. Oh, may be our Richard, I think we used to call him 'fung mao kui'(the whiteman).

I don't remember that part regarding old ladies bathing in the river.
Reminds me of another trip overland to KK from Sandakan when we went there for some interview (Shell scholarship?). The landrover overturned 270 degrees after taking a sharp corner too fast when we were almost in KK. The happy-go-lucky driver had been telling dirty stories all night whilst driving. Thank goodness we were all alive and unscathed. One of us was so scared he wetted his pants - can't be sure who it was (Camillo?).
Sorry it's me again - I forgot to sign off my name for the 3rd comment.
Regards,
Hubert
So who is the lucky one got the 'shell scholarship'
Ronnie
Well, actually I got it but turned it down as it was only for a diploma course in New Zealand and so HO Tze Min got it instead. I said this without any intention of boasting; in fact had Kwan Kar Choi sat for it, he would have got it but because he was aiming for something higher (and he did get the Shell degree scholarship), he gave us chances by not competing with us.
Looking back I wonder if I had made the right decision - that would have changed my life completely for better or for worse.
Thanks to Clement's information (not advice, or else I would have blamed him!), I took the decision to take up Quantity Surveying and the rest is history as they say.
How about you Ronnie? I can't remember exactly - did you leave before Form 5 and what is your occupation now? It's very obvious to me that you have spent most of your life in USA as you write and talk as a Yank. I would like to hear your history after St Mary's.
Regards,
Hubert
My history after St Mary, well Hubert, how do I begin? 30+yrs is a very, very long time. You know, I am no prolific writer like you all smarty guys. My English subject is 'C' at best thru out primary sch. Verbal, forget about it nobody understands me. B4 I begin, let me disclose that this is not a post to gloat or showboating one's accomplishment or failure. Like I love to say who cares. It's just a reflection of some highlights since 1970.
After 'the final' I went hiding in Tawau, too chicken to face the music & got a job as a shipping clerk & waited. When I found out that I scored 16 or 17 units, I realized that I am not quite that bird brain after all. Then I headed to KL & enrolled to a technical college(old man's idea & one of those colleges if u pay, Ur accepted). Didn't learn anything but scored a few KL chicks. By then I already applied to Univ in India,England & US & got accepted by all at year end. India-lots of horror stories-I passed. England-was told that I couldn't work and it would be financially draining to my parents. US-was told that I could work but Malaysia Gov wouldn't recognized the degree. By then I already made up my mind that I am not coming back to Mal so it didn't matter. I told my parents just gave me a plane ticket to US & one semester tuition fees & I would take it from there. To me, looking back that was one of the best decisions I ever made & from other articles I read, people in general tend to agree that 'when you are young, you take as much as calculated risk as your heart desired' Why? because you have nothing to start with so you have nothing to lose. As an asian, we're over protected by our parents & we don't like to step out of our comfort zone. I was fearless back then, may be naive is a better word.
1972-1976....BS Accounting(finished in 3 1/2 yrs out of 4 yrs prog. Not too bad since I supported myself but it was a very tough life-you work, study, sleep & no social life)
1977-1982....Lived and worked in Dallas, Baltimore & NYC ;Backpacked twice to Europe & Eastern Block; Started MBA & only 1/2 completed; started investing in stocks; still single, party, party & more party.
1983-1999....Finally grown up & settled dn; moved to LA & held various management postions in an aerospace co; backpacked again twice to Europe & Turkey; Retired in 1999
1999-now...Lost big chunk of money in the dot-com bust; still retire & spend a lot time on my favorite bobby-investing/stock market; travel a lot
That's it, Hubert, all in all I have a colorful and adventurous life since 1970 but I did had some struggles & hard times at the beginning. At this old age, I think we're more concern with our health than the assets we accumulated.
Now who is the next to bare himself on the blog, as the founder, u choose Ur next target.
Cheers,
Ronnie
Dear Ronnie,
I enjoyed reading your colourful life history over and over again. Thanks. I guess I have to describe mine next but I need to see your photo first (this request is also an excuse for procrastinating writing mine as I need more time - can't do it right now).
Other Old Boys,
Pls feel free to tell us your life story as well. Don't wait for me.
Regards,
Hubert
