Life after St. Mary's - Hubert

Well, Ronnie had written his - see the comments under the trip to Telupid. So I better do mine and I hope others will follow suit.

Kwan Kar Choi (Edmond), Julius Ho, Khoo Pui Guan and I went to UK together to study. We were kindly met by Albert Goh who took care of us in London. Then after that we went our separate ways, with Edmond staying at London, Julius and Pui Guan to North England (Teeside?) and myself to Nottingham, Robin Hood's 'home', where I pursued a degree in Quantity Surveying.

I spent my third year training in Southampton and after graduation in 1977, worked in London until I got a job with the Mass Transit Railway in Hong Kong in April 1979. Never thought of going to or settling down in HK - I thought if someone paid me an air ticket more than halfway to Malaysia, why not take the job?

I met my wife in the office and that's the main reason why I stayed back in HK. I had visited Canada a few times and liked it very much and as my parents and siblings (by 1980) have all emigrated to Canada, I would have liked to join them but alas Quantity Surveyors are unheard of in Canada. I would not want to change my profession. I did apply to Australia vis-a-vis the perceived threat of China's control after 1997 and was asked by the Australian embassy to go for an interview but as my parents preferred me to join them in Canada, I did not proceed further with the application.

My Malaysian passport is the last resort in case things went sour after 1997, so I did not bother with going elsewhere.

I worked for various companies but stayed with China Light & Power longest (20 years). Now I'm working with a QS consultant looking after one of the Phases of the Venetian Hotel & Resorts project in Macau.

Although I have met a few of you, on and off, I think I'm the loneliest one as far as being able to see our former classmates. In fact, apart from Robert Foo, I have not seen anyone of you guys at least over the last 13 years and the majority of you since St Mary's days. How I yearn to see you all in our re-union!

Regards,
Name: Hubert (Most of you knew me as Henry Hiew but as there were a few Henry Hiews around in Sabah I thought Hubert would be cool and so have adopted it since don't know when, maybe soon after landing in UK!)

Since you're the loneliest one & yearn for your old pal & I am depressed and misery needs company, we will keep each other entertained untill others join us.
Good post, Hubert, now I have a better picture of where you've been hiding after all this time. It's always been at the back of my head the 'whereabouts of you guys'. So'old boys', we all love to hear your juicy stories. We're no more under the intimidating looks of goldfinger, no body monitors us and definitely, you would not have written worst than me, what you got to lose? Some of you-the bright and brainy science majors may still have occasional bouts of nightmares from Mr.Thomas's chemistry class, you've my sympathy.
2 questions, Hubert,
1)How many hearts have you broken before you tied the knot.
2)Can we 'old boys' get a discount if we drop by Macau and stay at the Venetian ot at least get us some coupons at the buffet. You know, we're retired now, living on a fixed budget, every penny counts.

Cheers
Ronnie.

Ronnie (& Clement),

Ha, this typhoon came at the right time on this Friday morning, hence finding some time to catch up with my dear friends via email.

1. I did not break any heart as I don't fool around, though I was quite relieved when my wife came to "rescue" me as some ladies took my kindness for love.

2. If you do come to Macau, I can get you some corporate rates at the Regency and Casa Real (around MOP400-500 per day including breakfast). You could go for some kind of massage (no hanky panky)at the Waldolf (spelling?) in Taipa and stay overnight (no private room) for something like MOP200. Tommy Siew may know better some of the rougher places where chickens do knock at your doors at night! For food, you can eat all you can for around MOP30 at the Holiday Inn casino cafe. Sorry no buffet coupons.

3. How can we get more proactive participation in our blog? I find it hard to comprehend how guys like Julius Ho, Ho Tze Min, can remain silent/hidden for so looong without getting in touch with us????

4. I'm still waiting for your recent photo.

5. Fu Ka Hung just came back to HK few days ago. We are meeting up again on 30 August for the Malaysian Association anuual dinner ball.

6. Clement I think you should be the next one to outline your life after St. Mary's. Not as comment to mine but start as a new posting.

Regards,
Hubert

Thanks for the hotel deals. Waldorf-Astoria? no thank you, it's way out of my range. I need to dine on salted fish for a year if I stay there just for a day.
So what happen to Julius? For some unknown reason, I can still remember vividly the 'goodbye scene' when I dropped by Julius apt near the community ctr b4 I headed to KL. I can't recall any others except that one. Amazingly is that now, a lot of time I have no clue where I put my car keys or glasses & yet I remember scene some 30+ yrs, interesting.
Since we brainstorm the 2010 get-together, we may as well discuss how to drum up participation on the blog.
1)Can we post pictures (any kind)-like ur recent Dubai trip-it should increase traffic to the site. Delete old ones & keep adding new ones to keep the blog interesting.
2)We may have ran out of things to talk about the past(prior 1970),on top of old age, faded memories + MIA for over 30 yrs. I guess it's hard for some of us to reconnet. We're not sure if we were the same person some 30 yrs back. A lot of us has changed. I think I am still the same. So feel free to kick my butt if I go off the track. I won't pick a fight with you like I did with Camillo (sorry buddy, if you're reading, nothing personal, it was stupid then). May be we need to chat more about current affairs with topics like
a)Foods-best hawker food in S'kan, KK, KL or anywhere(the locals can sure whip the bald headed guy-Andrew Zimmern's recommendation in bizarre foods)
b)Traveling-I am sure a lot of you have exciting stories to tell or places to recommend visiting.
c)Invesing-I knew a thing or two in this dept. Feel free to ask & no guaranty that u won't lose money.
d)Sex-that's Tommy Siew's cup of tea, I won't touch that lah.

Cheers,
Ronnie.

Hi, so pitiful just to read Ronnie chatting Hubert up.... between the two.. they took up 90% of the blog space over recent weeks!

Hubert asked me to the next to wash my dirty linen on the blog & to bare my life for all to enjoy, after Ronnie and himself!

Well how ro condense 37 years (post St Marys) in a tiny box like this?

Ronnie, to answer your poser, yes, I am still scratching a living out of Harrisons ( or harrisons & Crosfield as you know it). sad that I still have to work to earn my keep at my advanced age!

Hi Clement,
Don't feel bad lah if you still working. Some of us had been kicked out(involuntary) due to you know...old age. Mind you, we would be honored & can only dream to be in ur shoes. Pretty soon, the only available position for some of us is to drive our demanding wives around town, watch & pick up grand kids from schools. I am not looking forward to that job.

Hubert,

I've read through all the interesting comments under this post. I've also noted with interest how you were 'saved' by Aretha. Evidently, you were everything that ladies would be looking for in a man - in short, a good catch.

It's a different story with me. I wasn't so innocent and definitely, I wasn't a good catch. I broke 4 or 5 hearts and I was severely punished in return! I was jilted real bad, dumped by a lady who gave me a powerful message that I wasn't good enough for her - in short, not a good catch for her! Boy, was my pride wounded to the core! That was the reason why I studied and worked so hard just to prove to that dumb lady that she could have made the biggest mistake in her life!

I finally married the very beautiful and talented daughter of the founder of Chung Hing Company, the best known newspapers agent in Sandakan. She has a number of better qualified suitors and I've no idea what she saw in me. She took a risky gamble. I was just plain lucky!

Cheers,
James
