Hi All,
Are these showing yet in Sandakan? I still can remember with fond memories all the good western films (Ben Hur, the Graduate) & Mandarin films (one armed swordman) were screened in Rex cinema (one employee used to fight with our beloved Tommy Siew whose father's shop was just next door) and the Cantonese films in Happy Valley (correct name?) in Tanah Merah where Sim Kum Lung grew up. I suppose these two cinemas and Cathay cinema are now gone?

Hi, Its Happy Theatre and not Happy Valley in Tanah Merah

Thanks for the correction. Been in HK too long - you probably have heard of HK's Happy Valley, where there is a horse-racing course!

Hubert,
I suceeded in posting a short message on the blog. But when I post a long message, something went wrong and it did not get on the blog!
I am testing ...

I used to go to cinema with my San Quee Lee gang. Usually, after the show, we went to Sandakan central market upstairs for fried noodles. Sometimes after the 2nd show when we missed the last Labuk Rd bus, we walked home to Mile 1.5.It was very safe then before the influx of illegal Filipino immigrants.
I went to Happy Theatre Tanah Merah quite a lot with Tommy Siew and Sim Kang Loon. We patronised the Happy Theatre market night stall for soup noodle, fried noodle and porridge frequently. That stall is now closed and the daughters/sons of the old proprietor are operating eatries elsewhere in town.Usually, we bought 50 sen ticket. As soon as we were inside, we walked into the toilet. After emerging, we tried to settle down in $1 seats. Sometimes, a torch shone on us as the patron is ushered to the seats occupied by us. We got up and walked into the toilet only to repeat the same feat as before.
Cathay cinema is demolished and is an open air car park. Rex and Happy Theatre were both closed for business. Rex was better and still intact and the tuck shop at the end of the building is still opeating. Happy Theatre is almost stripped bare by squatters.
Those were the good old days of Dr No 007, The Italian Job, The man From Istanbul, The Graduate, To Sir With Love etc.

Hate to say that the picture quality & the sound system in the new theatre in S'kan is way below par. I won't go back there again.
But s'kan hawker foods are awesome!!! They're the best.
