Camillo Cheng

This is a photo of Mr and Mrs Camillo Cheng, our St Mary's Form 5 Pefect. Edward and Selina Chik drove down from Vancouver to Seatle to meet him in front of his noodle making shop.
Camillo Cheng is one whom we hardly heard of or met in recent years.

Edward showed us the photo during our 12 May Old Boys Gathering in Supertanker Restaurant and I thought it would be nice to upload on our blog ... after all he was our Prefect and put us on the right path ...

St Mary's Old Boys Gathering 12 May 2011

We, St Mary's Old Boys, had a gathering in KK to meet up with Edward Chik during his home coming trip on 12 May 2011.

It was Khoo Puay Guan joining our mini reunion for the first time. Tried to invite Julius Ho but he would be in KL on 12 May and therefore could not make it. Sim Kang Loong, our favourite Old Boy, confirmed attendance earlier but backed out later as he needed to rush to Tawau on an important matter.

The dinner was hosted at Supertanker. Seated in the dinner photo from Left to Right are Edward Chik, Tommy Siew, Chang Kon Sang, Kwan Kar Choi and Sin Ka Hiew. Standing from L to R are Francis Fong, Khoo Puay Guan and Chung Hee Meng.

After dinner, we posed for a group photo outside the restaurant with Tommy Siew on the camera and hence he is not in the group photo.

It was too early to call it a night and we decided to go for a drink at Tommy Siew favourite drink hole at Bukit Padang Cafe where drinks are cheap, the place is breezy and opens until midnight.

We chat on "Those Were The Days" until closing time and everyone had a Good Good Nite....

Steamboat Reunion - Sandakan Hotel

Hi Old Boys,

On my recent trip to Sandakan, I enlisted our ever obliging Sin Ka Hiew to organise a get together dinner on Saturday, 27 November.

Its a "dry run" to our Grand Reunion on 11 November 2011.

Due to the short notice, prior engagements and being out of town, the number of Old Boys who turned up for the Steamboat Reunion of 2010 was smaller than the Ang Ban Guan Reunion Dinner of 2009..

But that did not diminish our enthusiasm to meet up and catch up over a chilled Tiger Beer and delicious steamboat.

Calling the Kanapi's

Mila,

Great to hear from you in the Chatbox. How did you manage to find our blog?

I'm one of the old boys from St. Mary's Primary School at Labuk Road (as opposed to the Town Primary School). I have been wondering about your brothers Jose and Robert all these years where they are and how they are faring.

Don't know if this message will reach you or your brothers. Anyway, do contact me at hhhhiew@msn.com.

We planning a re-union for the 1970 Form 5 graduates in Sandakan but others are always welcome to join. The date is easy to remember: 11-11-11, i.e. 11 Nov next year.

Looking forward to hearing from you or Jose/Robert!

Regards,

Hubert (Henry) Hiew Hon Hiung

Mini Tong Fung Reunion KK - 4 October 2010

Hi All,

Hubert was last in KK some 15 years ago to make his new Malaysian IC. He returned on 30 September 2010 to climb Mt Kinabalu with some of his Hongkie friends. Hubert returned to HK on 4 October afternoon. Richard Chan who is a frequent returnee to KK was also in KK around that time. Richard was to fly to our home town, Sandakan, on 8 October.

I returned from Seoul on 3 October, close to midnite, and whilst still at KK Airport, received Hubert's SMS  to confirm our breakfast meeting on the following morning. About 7 am on 4 Oct (Monday), Richard Chan called to join in. After reaching Tong Fung Restoran, we called Tommy Siew, still in his slumber, to join us.

The photos are just a flashback of that mini reunion at Tong Fung Restoran.

Mini Reunion - Bukit Padang

Before Foo Ka Hung returned to Hong Kong on 6 August (Friday), we had another drink session in Bukit Padang - the favourite haunt for joggers in Kota Kinabalu on 5th August night.

We were fortunate that Sim Kang Loong was able to join us this time .... its must be his first instance in reunion. We were all looking forward to seeing him, after so many years, and he was indeed the last, but not late, to appear in Bukit Padabg Hawker Centre which opens until midnight.

Again, we talked about old times .... until midnight when the stalls cleared their tables and it was indeed time to leave!

Sharing the moments with all our Old Boys

Reunion at La Fuente in 1 Borneo Hypermall

Hi All,

We had Hi Tea in La Fluente at 1 Borneo Hypermall on 1 August 2010.

There was a series of get together with Foo Ka Hung when he came back to Kota Kinabalu from 26 July - 6 August.

On 28 July, Chong Shui Lung and Kon Sang had lunch with Ka Hung at King Hua Restaurant at Tanjong Aru. Shui Lung went back to Sandakan the same eveing.

Sin Ka Hiew drove from Sandakan to KK for a meet up over the weekend. So I arranged for Hi Tea in 1 Borneo on 1 August, Sunday afternoon. We invited Kar Choi and Hee Meng to join us. We also called Sim Kang Loong but got a "Sorry Wrong Number" reply. Tommy Siew was away in Penang. During Hi Tea, we also called Edward Chik (in Australia), Julius Ho (in KK) and Khoo Pui Guan (in KK).

After Tommy return from Penang, I arranged dinner with Tommy to meet up Ka Hung in Supertanker Restaurant on Tuesday, 3 August. After dinner, we adjouned to have drink at Jesselton Point until midnight. It was Ka Hung first meeting with Tommy since Form 5.

Its reunions like this that we rekindled memories of our good old days in St Marys.

Inter House Sports Meet - St Mary's Secondary School

Hi,

Remember St Mary's School Inter-House Sports Meet in the school padang?  May be not for some and this photo serves to bring back your memories.

Most would  have better and more vivid memories of the Inter School Sports Meet in the Town Padang. Wow during the Inter School Sports Meet... St Cecelia girls would cheer for St Mary's athletes and St Mary's boys would do likewise for Cecelians. And ususally, St Cecelia and St Mary's schools were seated next to each other on the grand stand. Lots of confetti raining down and you could always cast your confetti in the direction of your favourite girls.

Our school arch enemies at the Inter School Sports Meet were St Michaels and later Sung Siew School (including some hot heads ex St Marians who could not go onto St Mary's Form IV and V and had to join Sung Siew Form IV and V instead.)

One famous St Micahel female athlete was "Golden Hair" (Catherine Chae).

Popular St Cecelia girls who attracted  a lot of confetti cast by our classmates included Lai Man Thing, Rita Garnica, Janet Lee, Bridgit Chin, Catherine Chang, Bernadette Kan, Patsy Poon, Felicity Khoo, Mimi Shim and others.

Folks feel free to add your favourite girls' names in! ... Also, where are these dream girls now ?

Let us go back to the topic... its our Inter House Sports Meet we have to talk about - an all Boys affair! Boring, ......isn't it! The photo was on the Yellow House Pavilion. Chu Sai Kee, as you all know, was our star High Jumper. Not sure what Victor Sin and James Chai were good in? They appeared more like coaches than athletes.

Hidden inside the tent was a smiling Frederick Ong! No athlete himself but he is our only classmate who went on to become a Doctor (from University of Liverpool).

We always looked forward to the Inter School Sports Meet then as students but now I do not think any of us, as parents, would bother to turn up at our children Inter-School or Inter-House Sports Meet!

Our interests have navigated away to other more interesting pursuits.

Our Elton Johns

Hi,

It must be "cool" to look like a scholar in the 60s by donning thick rimmed glasses in school! Be "cool" (or look groovy ) in the eyes of all those adoring St Cecelia girls?
-
According to the Oxford Dictionery, a scholar is "a boy or girl at school with much knowledge"
-
In the 60s, we all remembered the rage of the mini skirts popularised by Mary Quant and the outrageous spectacles worn by Elton John in UK.
-
Were Kar Choi, James Chai and Robert Foo trying to look as cool as Elton John?
-
Camillo, Edward and Victor were happy to remain " clear eyed "before the onslaught of those desirable creatures from across the school fence.
