Romeos From St Mary's

Hi,

Our innocent looking Romeos from St Mary's 1970 Class.

The Romeo with the most stylish pose is none other than our Sim Kang Loong.

Based on their good look, Edward, Ronny & Hee Meng could have easily explored acting careers with HK "Shaw Brothers" except airfare to HK then weren't cheap........

Who is the Romeo wearing the hat?

The missing Romeo from this photo is, of course, Hubert Hiew and this photo is indeed incomplete without him!

Hi guys,

Francis Fong has started the ball rolling and he has got his PA to print almost all of what we have posted to th4 blog and ready to begin to organise the setting up of the Bulletin of our Re-union. I was in his office this morning and gave him a little bit of advise of how to retrieve the comments made and posted onto the blog by some of you. He is indeed very keen and interested in our blog and I believe he can manage to have the Bulletin printed given the co-opertions he required. Come on guys, please give him a good pad on the back for a job well done.

So everybody, you should know what to do lah .......

RE-UNION BULLETIN

Hi guys,
I have met up with Francis Fong on Saturday (15.8.09) afternoon and discussed on the issue of our Re-union. Francis proposed that we should have a Bulletin in regards of he class activities of our good old days and our own profiles printed for the occassion. Provided the Re-union is going to be a success, he has offered himself to be responsible for the printing of this Bulletin and requires the co-operation from each and every one of us in this aspect.
For all of you who are currently outside Sandakan, kindly post your most recent photo and your profile onto the blog while those who are in Sandakan are also required to also have your most recent photo ready and have your profile readyand past to Francis or to me for I will be the co-ordinator. We required your assistance in order to make the Re-union a success.
Thank you

Hi,

It was St Mary's 1970 Class first and only blood donation campaign.

Check if you can recognise all the budding Sylvester Stallones in the photo.

You will not miss Victor Sin in all the recent photo postings (Toy Boy, To Sir With Love, The Young Ones) as they are his photo collections!

"Mysterious" Visitors to our blog

Pls take a look at the Visitors Locations Map: it's interesting to see that for the past 2 or 3 months (click into "Current Country Totals"), the no. of visitors to our blog from Canada is 35, Singapore 4 and UK is 3.

I'm surprised at the no. from Canada - apart from Victor who is probably more preoccupied with his Facebook, and Chong Nyuk Woo, who else could it be?

If we rule out casual surfing and predators, who else could it be from S'pore and UK?

We can ignore those with 1 or 2 visits as they are most likely casual surfers ranging from Nigeria to Yemen. (I might have visited the blog when I was using the internet in the cruise which started from Coperhagen and in Paris, hence it shows some visitors from Denmark and France?)

Pls reveal yourselves if you used to study with us at St Mary's. You may contact me at hhhhiew@msn.com.

Pls note that the statistics is based on the location of the computer from which the visitor visited our blog.

The Young Ones

Hi

Sir Cliff Richard had a pop song called "The Young Ones" in the 1960s.
-
This song aptly describes the young handsome faces you see in this undated photo.
-
Rumours had it that the "Devil Women" (another Sir Cliff Richard number) from St Cecelia's Convent went crazy all over them .......
-
At the end of the day, how many of these most eligible "Bachelor Boys" married all those desirable St Cecelia girls?
-
Put your hands up!

To Sir With Love

It was indeed a memorable photo which I have been keeping for about 40 years. I remembered we were at the Airport to see Bro. Raphael off in early 1971 and it was a pity that only few of us were there for the occassion. I can still visualized the broad smile on Goldfinger's face on that day. Keep logging onto the blog as there will be more old photos to come.

To Sir With Love

Hi,

This is indeed another memorable photo from Victor Sin!

Was it a "send off" for Bro Raphael (Goldfinger) at Sandakan Airport? Or was it sending Bro Aiden or Bro Frederick off?

James Chai was facing the camera but also noticed Edward Chik and Albert Koh Chiat Hong were in the "send off" crowd.
We can also see the face of an Indain teacher... could not remember what subjects he was teaching us or whether he taught in Form 4 or Form 5 Science classes.

All our Form 5 1970 old boys have fond memories of Bro Raphael and this blog password in his honour is a testament of his bearing on all of us.

On Bro Aiden, he taught us Scripture (and English Literature?) in Arts Stream class. Usually, he just walked around the class asking one after another to stand up and read paragraphs from the Gospel According to St Luke (or was it Acts of Apostles?) He resembled David McCallum, an actor in " The Man from U.N.C.L.E" - a James Bond type of movie. Standing next to Bro Aiden, in dark glasses (as it was then the James Bond era) was Victor Sin .
-
Sir, Thank You .... for all those memories and for coming all the way from Ireland to educate us, all those Murderers of the English Language, in Ulu Sandakan.

TOY BOY

Hi,

This is a photo of our Form Prefect, Mr Camillo Cheng, being harrassed by his classmates during recess in front of our Form 5 Class in 1970.

Both Victor Sin and Jimmy Augustine took fancy on something on Camillo Cheng's chest and put their hands to work on it!

Young and handsome James Chai looked on with a smile but refused to join in this "unholy" act. Notice the pair of spectacles in James's shirt pocket! Without glasses, he was a handsome young man.
-
We would never get to know who was hidden behind Camillo.
-
Notice the flight of stairs in the background? It leads up to Form 6 and down to Form 4 (our classroom before we went on to Form 5).
-
All would remember Jimmy's "sex" jokes in class and his song " House of The Rising Sun". Not only was Jimmy a joker and singer but also an actor - Jimmy was St Mary's main pillar in the Inter School Performance Competition.

Mini Reunion Dinner at Ang Ban Guan

Hi,

Victor Sin was quick to arrange a mini St Mary's Old Boys reunion dinner on 30 July (Thursday) at Ang Ban Guan, a wooden shop restaurant along Jalan Sim Sim (next to the Sandakan Mosque)which serves decent seafood.

Gracing the re-union dinner were Chong Shui Lung, Foo Ka Hung, Sin Ka Hiew, Chong Ken Foh, Chang Piang Thiam, Jorgy Juana, Francis Fong, Chai Heng Wing, Pun Vui Poh, Chung Ket Chung, Lee Len Wing and the writer.

Dr Frederick Ong, Albert Koh Chiat Hong and Chu Sai Kee were also contacted but could not make it. Victor could only manage to contact Dr Ong on 30 July morning as Frederick was outstation on Wednesday, Albert Koh just came back from UK & had another dinner invitation and Chu Sai Kee is presently in L Datu.

It was a light hearted dinner from 7.00 - 9.30 pm and all were there more for the bonding and the chatter with old classmates (after leaving St Mary's 39 years ago) than for the seafood!

Check if you can recognise your St Mary's classmates in the photo.

Upperstar Get Together - 18 July 2009

Hi,

On Friday (17/7/09) morning , I called Victor Sin Ka Hiew in Sandakan and was told that Lawrence Chong Shui Lung and Robert Foo Ka Hung were flying to Kota Kinabalu that morning.

I contacted Lawrence Chong re arrangement. After his Saturday golf, most likely we could have a drink together in the evening. I had not met Robert Foo Ka Hung since we left St Mary's Form V in 1970.

After my Saturday (18/7/09) badminton games, I soon got a call from Lawrence Chong, asking me to join him, Robert Foo Ka Hung and Lawrence Chung Hee Meng for a drink at Upperstar Pub in town. I was keen to meet up with Robert Foo and Hee Meng (whom I had not met for years). Shortly after I arrived, Edmund Kwan Kar Choi and Albert Lee also showed up. Sim Kang Loong was also contacted but could not make it. Tommy Siew was again not in town and away in China.

We talked about our St Mary's happenings ......

Although most were approaching 60 years of age, we talked about our St Mary's days as if we were still in our secondary school years! But we all knew we were getting on and looking forward to the Old Boys Reunion in Sandakan.

Whilst Kar Choi and myself had to go back for our family weekend dinner at home, Robert Foo Ka Hung, Lawrence Chung Hee Meng, Chong Shui Lung and Albert Lee went on for a dinner in town.

When we met up, we treasured our moments together.....once we were all together in the same classroom as boys and now we are fathers of adult sons and daughters.

Hello

Hello all my fellow classmates.

Greetings from Sandakan. Seems that we have been very quiet lately.
Is the Re-union still on. Met up with Ronnie Chung when he was back in Sandakan and he proposed to have it some time in late July or early August 2010. Noverber will not be aporopiate as normally School will be closed for the last term holidays. What say all of you.

Robert Foo is now in Sandakan and will be here until early August 09 and we too have discussed on the issue and he confirmed that he will be back for the occassion. We are really running out of time and someting really needed to be done if we are serious about it. Lawrence Chong is trying and working very hard but not me.

Nothing was in the blog for the past few weeks.

Dear All,

This was sent by Richard some weeks ago which I should have put on our blog but never got round to doing it until now. I think this photo is really a gem, with all these young & handsome men. (Sad though, Lee Len Fook is not with us now in this land of the living).

Richard,

Was this taken in Sandy Beach (or whatever the name is)?

Ronnie
My god bless you always,

Tommy Says

Hello Everybody,

I am trying to post on the blog for the very first time.

I am surprised to read that I have so much $$$$$ and I thought it was indeed a sweet dream and I don't want to wake up and also afraid to wake up to face the cruel reality of life..

Clement is too kind to me to tell you all that I enjoy such "luxury" in life and that was because he only saw one side of the coin ... seeing me spending all my $$$ in true Bumiputra spirit.

My philosophy in life is from "From Dust We Come and To Dust Shall We Return" and for every dollar I earn, I want to spend $1.10 if i could and I would .... I am a Born Free Man to live my full life in this world and do not want to have regrets in life later .... Amen!

I prefer my own life style - as we do not know what tomorrow will bring you. I want to enjoy and see this pleasant world whilst I can still walk and exist on this planet. This is my way of finding happiness and fulfillment in life...... I don't care what other people think of me as I do not owe anyone a living. As long as I earn a decent living, enough to lead my care-free life style and do no bad deed against my conscience, I will have peace in mind, here and hereafter. I am a believer of the philosophy of "Cause & Effect" meaning "You Sow What You Reap".

Whenever I am in a position to do so, I do charity and community work ... giving small donations and leading young people who are lost in their path and "coach" them back to the right track in their life journey - morally and physically - to find love again!

Even now, sometimes I am also lost myself and need to seek love and happiness before I sing Auld Lang Sye- that's the irony of life!

RONNY MET UP WITH KK SAPI GANG MEMBERS

Hi,

On Sunday (7 June) I got a urgent late night call from Thomas Siew asking me to join him to welcome our US returned and ex Sapi Gang Member flying in from Sandakan. Ronny Chung has not met Thomas for over 30 years and Thomas was most excited to see how he looks and how he talks .....
On Monday morning, before I could warm up my office chair, Thomas called me at 9 am to say that he was driving over from his Api Api Apartment but would want to go to the airport in my company car instead. This was to give Ronny a grand welcome! So we drove off but were early, sitting in the car waiting.... then Ronny in his Yankee cap walked out of the Arrival Lounge towards my car. I pointed to Thomas that he was Ronny but Thomas wasn't so sure as he had not seen his gang budddy for > 30 years. It was a warm meeting at the airport and we decided to adjourn to a kopitiam (coffee shop) for drinks and "catch up" chit chat.

I brought my camera for the occassion as the last mini reunion in Burger King in Damai KK was not captured in photos ............ We asked the pretty daughter of the coffeee shop boss to snap the shots for us. Now, you old boys can get a first glimpse of (you can view the ENLARGED photo by clicking on the photo above) Thomas Siew who is so fortunate to be blessed with lots of $$$$$$, a strong and robust waist (maintained in good shape with constant live exercises in bed) and so able to still enjoy his envious "happy go lucky life style" after all these years! Ronny was most keen to join Thomas on his next China "canon" trip but he was forewarned by Thomas that his heart must be large enough for more than one woman!

The meeting was not too long as Ronny needed to catch his 12 noon flight to KL where he would stay in his relative house in K Lumpur USJ Section 9 for two weeks. Believe that Ronny would squeeze the very best out of his stay in this most vibrant city. Ronny, without a middle age bulge, still looks 40s in his cap and therefore should still be in demand and much sought out by our Asian & China dolls (compared to the hugh Yankee/ African/Latino varieties in Texas or LA) in this truly Asian city.
Just before we left the coffee shop, a scuffle broke off between Thomas and Ronny as they tried to settle the drink bill leaving me as the innocent bystander.

We dropped Ronny off at KKIA at 11 am (Monday 8 June) and we treasured every moment when we were together chatting about "those were the days".

FW: A little get together

I have taken the liberty to consider that this photo and the mail below all from Richard are meant to be published in our blog. A very nice photo of you all in the picture. I must say I can't quite remember the two Leongs and also Benedict Tai. Is Benedict the one who used to live next door to Edward Tan of Mile 1 1/2, Labuk Road? I can still recognise Albert Lee - his sweet smile!

Hi Hello I am Tommy Siew we did not meet for almost half a century.Times really fly . Nostigia bring back memory of those good old school odays when everyone of us is so care free, hopeful and cheerful and I really hope we can turn back the times and down to the memory lane.It is a good idea to hv a reunion to reclloct those lost treasures where no monetary value can match esp those inherent truth and frank childhood friendship estahlished through those school days together. To hv a Reunion during our economic life is a race against time before we say the final Auld Lang syn ! am glad to know all our classmate are doing well and contribute to the society

Reunion between Lawrence & Hubert

Hi Guys,

Kind of late to let you know Lawrence Chong met me at the Venetian Casino/Hotel in Macau recently. It was quite a coincidence that I happened to be working at the Venetian project and my office is just 10 minutes away from the venue for meeting up.

We had a great chat about old times and the proposed re-union programme. It was a brief reunion but I treasure every minute of our time together as I probably hadn't seen him since after Form 3!
